Last week, Electra.aero successfully completed first-of-its-kind flights from a heliport on a commercial airport ramp at the Roanoke–Blacksburg Regional Airport with its EL2 Ultra Short technology demonstrator. The objective was to demonstrate how fixed-wing aircraft could potentially use infrastructure and flight procedures traditionally associated with helicopters.The demonstrations tested point-in-space instrument procedures and dedicated routings intended to enable operations in poor weather while connecting heliports, vertiports, taxiways, and other compact operating locations. The work was conducted with the Virginia Smart Airspace Program and other partners as part of efforts associated with the FAA’s eVTOL and Advanced Air Mobility Integration Pilot Program.Electra says the demonstrations will help develop an operational framework for its planned EL9 Ultra Short aircraft, a nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft designed to take off and land in less than 150 feet. This week's #MemberMonday, Heart Aerospace, just unveiled its ES-36, a redesigned 36-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft, alongside a deposit-backed purchase agreement from Dallas-based JSX for 50 aircraft and purchase rights for an additional 50.The ES-36 replaces Heart’s previous 30-seat ES-30 concept and features two series-hybrid powertrains instead of four engines. The redesign adds six passenger seats and 1,415 pounds of payload while retaining the ES-30’s maximum takeoff weight and battery capacity. The aircraft has a 95-foot wingspan, approximately 11 feet shorter than its predecessor, with Heart saying the simplified configuration is intended to reduce maintenance requirements. Each powertrain incorporates a 1.65-megawatt electric motor.Heart expects the ES-36 to provide an all-electric range of 125 miles plus reserves using batteries charged on the ground, while onboard turbine generators would extend its hybrid range to 745 miles plus reserves. The company is targeting operating costs at least 40% below those of legacy regional aircraft. Heart is building its first pre-production ES-36 in Los Angeles and plans a first flight in the second half of 2028, followed by FAA certification and entry into service in 2031. ...
