Recently, Vertical Magazine reported that the Los Angeles County Fire Department has chosen Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division to supply two new S-70i Firehawk helicopters, continuing a partnership that began more than two decades ago. These aircraft will strengthen the department’s ability to respond to wildfires, perform rescues, and carry out emergency medical missions across the county’s 4,000 square miles. The Firehawk, produced by Lockheed Martin, is an advanced variant of the Black Hawk helicopter adapted specifically for firefighting. Each aircraft carries a 1,000-gallon water tank equipped with a snorkel system that can refill in less than a minute. Powered by twin-turbine engines, the Firehawk can reach speeds of up to 155 knots and operate at altitudes as high as 10,000 feet. It also features night-vision compatible controls, allowing firefighters to continue operations after dark.Read the whole story at the link: bit.ly/4oq2bvN ... See MoreSee Less

The FAA approved the first in a series of upgrade packages MD Helicopters developed for its MD 500D, offering operators a cost-effective way to enhance performance without buying a new aircraft. The initial package, called the Super D20B, introduces longer main and tail rotor blades, an upgraded gearbox, a modified tail boom, and redesigned stabilizers. These improvements raise the helicopter’s maximum gross weight by about 350 pounds. MD Helicopters is also developing two follow-on versions: the Super D30, with a 650-shp M250-C30 engine expected by December, and the Super D20R, featuring a 450-shp M250-C20R engine planned for early 2026. ...
