Engine maker Rolls-Royce plc has completed a decade-long investment of approximately $986 million in its manufacturing, assembly, and engine-testing facilities in Indiana, its largest investment in the U.S. The program modernized advanced manufacturing at its Indianapolis campus and added full engine-testing capabilities, including new ground-test facilities and an altitude-test facility in West Lafayette. Wisk Aero broke ground on a new 100-by-100-foot vertiport at Hollister Municipal Airport in California that will serve as a testbed for both piloted and autonomous aircraft operations. Designed to current FAA vertiport standards, the modular, relocatable facility incorporates elevated steel structures, solar panels, power banks and taxiway connections. Wisk Aero plans to use the site to evaluate terminal-area procedures and precision landing technology under conditions including missed approaches, reduced visibility and GPS-denied operations. Transceivers installed on the landing pad will support precision operations by helicopters, eVTOL aircraft and eventually Wisk’s autonomous Generation 6 air taxi. Data gathered through testing will support Wisk’s autonomous flight development while also contributing to the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program and development of future vertiport standards. ...
