GAMA/AOPA Webinar this Friday, Oct 5 at 1pm EDT on FAA Part 23 Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC)

GAMA NEWS 12-42 For Immediate Release: Oct 2, 2012

Please join GAMA and AOPA this Friday, October 5 at 1:00pm EDT for a webinar on the recent work of the FAA Part 23 Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC).

BACKGROUND
Over the past several decades general aviation activity has steadily declined.  Today there are fewer than 200,000 active private pilots in the United States, this is the lowest number since 1965.  Over the last decade, a steady trend has developed with the loss of 10,000 pilots per year.  There is strong consensus among experts as to why the decline continues:

– Cost (and Value for the Cost)
– Complexity of Flying & Remaining Current

The cost of acquiring and flying an airplane has grown for a number of reasons and these costs impact the entry-levels of aviation most significantly.  In today’s environment, the average airplane is 40-years old and there are few new entry-level airplanes offered which does little to entice the public into light general aviation.

In November 2011 an international effort began to revitalize general aviation airplanes and to enable retrofits on the existing fleet.  The FAA Part 23 Reorganization Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) has been chartered with the goal of cutting the cost of new airplane certification (and retrofits) in half while offering products with twice the safety.  In order to counter the stable and negative trends in light general aviation, the ARC plans to make some ground shifting recommendations which will require the knowledge and participation of the entire aviation community to become successful.

The conversation cannot stop simply by fixing the issues involved in airplane certification, but it’s a very important start.  Please join us for a briefing to discuss what can be if we work together to fix general aviation for future generations.
