Lockheed Martin’s famed Skunk Works has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Electra.aero to accelerate the development of the EL9 Ultra-STOL hybrid-electric aircraft. The initiative will leverage Skunk Works’ expertise in digital engineering, manufacturing, supply chain management, sustainment, and global market development. The strategic move builds on their existing relationship as Lockheed Martin Ventures invested in Electra’s Series A round in 2022, and aims to fast-track EL9’s path to flight testing in 2027 and entry into service by 2029. It can carry up to 1,000 lb of cargo over approximately 1,000 nm, while offering the cost, safety, and range advantages of fixed-wing aircraft, and quieter operation than helicopters. With joint efforts underway, Lockheed and Electra are exploring both commercial and Department of Defense acquisition pathways, including “programs of record,” signaling strong interest in the EL9’s potential for both civilian last-mile transport and strategic military deployment. ...
