Joby Aviation has designed its electric air taxi with a strong focus on blending into the everyday soundscape of cities. Engineers modeled its acoustic footprint in Los Angeles, comparing the aircraft’s noise with the ambient sounds of traffic, sirens, and construction. The results showed that the vehicle is only audible beyond background levels for about 0.17 miles during takeoff and landing, and once in cruise flight, the audible range shrinks dramatically to just 0.004 miles, or around 20 feet. By contrast, traditional helicopters remain audible for up to 45 miles over city noise, highlighting the scale of difference in sound impact. From the earliest stages of development, Joby Aviation has prioritized quiet operation, tailoring every system and component to reduce acoustic intrusion in urban environments. Supporting research presented at the AIAA Aviation Forum found that typical city sounds at around 1,000 meters altitude would likely mask the Joby aircraft completely, making it imperceptible to most people unless they knew exactly what to listen for. Previous NASA noise testing also emphasized the importance of sound levels for public acceptance and the viability of advanced air mobility. Overall, Joby’s findings suggest that its aircraft will be far quieter than helicopters and largely unnoticeable to city residents, making acoustic subtlety a defining characteristic of its design. ...
